Pauline Smith Love died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018, in Washington after a lengthy illness. Pauline was the daughter of the Rev. Matt G. and Nancy Akridge Smith of Southside. Born on Dec. 3, 1921, she was raised in Southside and attended school at Southside, graduating in 1941.
During her young life, she was a member of Pilgrims Rest (later First Baptist Church, Southside) Baptist Church, where her family had been founding members. After high school, she attended Alverson Business College in Birmingham, graduating in 1942.
She worked for Southern Air, where she met Robert S. Love from Illinois, who was serving in the United States Air Force. They were married in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1945. Robert Love became career military and Pauline became active in the social lives at their various postings. During their service years, Pauline and Bob lived in Illinois, Alabama, Texas, Kansas, Hawaii, and at Travis Air Force Base just outside Oakland, California. It was primarily in California that they raised their three children.
As a dedicated military wife, Pauline was active in the Officers' Wives Club, serving as social director. Pauline wrote for several local newspapers about activities at the bases where the family was stationed. While at Travis Air Force Base, she volunteered at Children's Hospital in Oakland, spearheading an annual fashion show for local women whose proceeds supported the work of the hospital. Pauline modeled for these shows and at other venues around Oakland. When they retired, they lived for over 40 years in Pinole, California.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Robert S. Love; parents, Mattison Griffin Smith and Nancy Akridge Smith; and siblings, James M. Smith and Charles S. Smith and their wives, all of Southside.
She is survived by her children, Thomas R. Love, Ph.D., Los Angeles, California; Nancy Love Rubin, Edmonds, Washington; and Michael W. Love, Ph.D., Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Thomas Harold Smith of Glencoe; and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service and interment will be at the cemetery near Travis Air Force Base at a later date.
