Son of Judge Jonathan Sewall, Senior, and Ester {Quincy} Sewall, his wife, of Cambridge, British North America, and later of Montreal, Lower Canada. (NOTE: The family changed the spelling of their surname to Sewell after they settled in Canada)

On 18 June 1801, at Montreal, Stephen Sewall married Jane Caldwell (1781 - 1847); they brought 12 children into the world

He died at the age of 62, during the 1832-1834 outbreak of cholera which struck Quebec City as well as Montreal and places between. It was the first time in history that this plague is recorded to have reached anywhere in North America. The body would have been interred in a 'Cholera Cemetery', which at that time would have been well outside the walls of the Old Town of Montreal.
