Joan disappeared on October 24th, 1961. It is believed she died - possibly accidentally while disoriented from blood loss and/or head injury - but some also believe she faked her own disappearance. An investigator from the original case believes a disoriented Joan fell into a pit along Route 128, which was under construction at the time, and was then unable to extricate herself, thus ending up buried when the road was finished.
Joan's case is the subject of the book, "A Kitchen Painted in Blood" by Stephen H. Ahern.
