Neil was the youngest of six children of Anders Peter Larsen (aka Peter, born 1856 in Sweden) and Ann (Annie) Andersen (born 1856 in Sweden. Peter and Annie married in 1873 and lived in the Barcaldine Region, at Howard in Wide Bay, and on the Darling Downs in QLD where Peter was a Labourer and a Farmer.

Neil was a Horsebreaker when he enlisted in the AIF in January 1915 as a Private (Service No:1034) with 2nd Light Horse Regiment 6th Reinforcements. He served at Gallipoli and in Egypt, and was a Sapper with the 1st Field Squadron Engineers when he was Discharged in November 1919. Neil had spelled his name as Neail on his Attestation Papers (his Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates and other official records have his name as Neil, and in letters to the Army his mother Annie refers to him as Neil). Older brother Lars was a Chaplain (Service No:Q140949) in WWII.

Returning to QLD, Neil worked as a Labourer in Bundaberg QLD, and in 1920 married Louisa Gick (born 1891 in Maryborough, QLD) in Maryborough, QLD. Neil and Louisa moved to Childers, where Neil was a Labourer in the 1920s, then moved back to Maryborough in the 1930s. Neil was a Farmer at Maryborough, QLD when Louisa died in 1942. Neil was a Labourer in Maryborough when he Retired in 1950. He died in 1957.
