Dennis Jay Beltman - Obituary
(July 21, 1951 - March 7, 2014)

Mr. Dennis Beltman, age 62, of Orange City, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend of many, lost the last battle for his life on Friday, March 7, 2014, at home. His long and hard fight with cancer was over.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, March 11, at 10:30am, at the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jeffrey Whitt and the Rev. Nicholas Koenig will officiate. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Dennis Jay was born on July 21, 1951, in rural Sanborn, the son of Jim and Joyce (Van Leeuwen) Beltman. He was raised on a farm by Hospers. He attended the Hospers Christian School and the Western Christian High School in Hull.

On November 27, 1971, he married Doris Jean Vrieze in Alton. They made their home in Orange City. He was employed at Russell’s Ready-Mix in Orange City for twenty years. In 2011, he retired from what became G. C. C. Concrete.

“Denny” attended the New Hope Evangelical Free Church.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and target practice. He cherished the special relationship he had with his sons, especially when they went hunting. He was grateful for the extra time he had with his daughter, while he was ill. One of the greatest joys of his life was spending time with his grandchildren, who called him “Papa”.

Dennis stared down cancer every time it struck in a new place, and he met each challenge head on, determined to win each battle. He was a true inspiration to all, especially through his fight with cancer. He was tougher than cancer; it was not going to silence his sense of humor or squash his determination to live.

As Robert Louis Stevenson said, “A man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much.” He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years; three children and their spouses, Kelly and Melissa (Popken) Beltman, of Hospers, and their daughter, Kylah; Stacy and Dave Boever, of Orange City, and their children, Trey, Samantha, Brandon, and Madison; and Travis and Bobbi (Kelley) Beltman, of Brandon, South Dakota, and their children, Teya, Jacee, and Bryce; his step-mother, Gladys Beltman, of Sheldon; a brother and his wife, Arlyn and Elaine Beltman, of Alton; a sister and her husband, Karen and Greg Jeltema, of Orange City; a brother-in-law and his wife, John and Helen Peuse, of Sioux Center; Doris’ siblings and their spouses, Terry and Cheryl Vrieze, of Urbandale; Stephanie Korver, of Overland Park, Kansas; Mary and Jerry Brink, of Princeton; Michael and Linda Vrieze, of Sioux City; and Lisa and Terry Hodgson, of Le Mars; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sons, Dereck and D. J. Beltman; a sister, Gloria Peuse; his wife’s parents, Dores and Blanche Vrieze; two brothers-in-law, Ken Korver and Arlin Goslinga; a sister-in-law, Tracy Vrieze; a nephew, Timothy Hodgson; and a great-niece, Kaylee Van Regenmorter.

The family thanks Dr. Hanson and Dr. Doddabele for their special care.
