James Armitage Emery married Mrs. Agnes Hutton Howser on 1 November 1900 in Washington, D. C. He later adopted Agnes' daughter Helen Katherine Howser.

James graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine in 1907.

At the time of his death, James was the Acting Chief Clerk of the Biochemic Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture.
