Perth, Oct. 24.
Benjamin Robert Bax met his death at the Ascot Hotel, near the
W A T C racecourse, early on Saturday morning, under somewhat mysterious circumstances. Deceased, with his two brothers was staying at the hotel. They retired about 11 p. m., and some little time afterwards deceased was seen going onto the balcony with some rugs, apparently with the intention of sleeping out. Shortly afterwards the licensee discovered the unfortunate man lying on the ground near the front steps, in a dying condition.
Life was extinct when medical assistance arrived. Deceased, who was a returned soldier, came to this State with his brothers, who are well known in sporting circles, just prior to the Goldfields meetings. It is said that he took a fit at the recent Goodwood meeting. An inquest was opened and adjourned. The remains were taken to South Australia for interment on last evening's limited express.
A very large number of sports men assembled on the Kalgoorlie
Station yesterday when the express conveying the remains of B. R. Bax arrived. His brothers George (the well-known jockey) and Jack were on board. Amongst those present was Mr. 6. G. Toleman, a cousin of the deceased. Representatives of the
Goldfields Horseowners and Trainers' Association carried the coffin from the State train to the Commonwealth train. The parents of the deceased reside at Mt. Pleasant, South Australia.
