August C. Guse, 83, a life-long resident of this community, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Craite, in Milwaukee. He had been in failing health for the past few months. The body was brought to the Koepsell Funeral Home, where last rites will be held Thursday at 1:30 o'clock and in St. John's Lutheran church at 2 p. m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Rev, G. F. Barthel will officiate.

Mr. Guse got a lot of enjoyment out of life. He was one of the first in Mayville to own an automobile, having bought a single cylinder Oldsmobile in 1902. He enjoyed telling about the trials and tribulations of the early days of the automobile. He was one of the members of the original volunteer fire department, and was the city's first full-time water works engineer. Then for many years he worked for C. Engel & Sons. After he retired in 1940, he worked part time at the plumbing trade.

He was born on May 20, 1867 in the town Theresa, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Franz Guse. On Nov. 27, 1894 he was married here to Miss Pauline Dittbrender, and for 50 years they made their home in Mayville. Mrs. Guse preceded her husband in death.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. George Craite, Milwaukee; two sons, Arnold H., of Horicon, and Victor E., of Milwaukee; four grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Henry Schlegel, this city. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
