He was born June 21, 1871 (?) in Ripton, Vermont and came with his parents to Illinois at the age of 17. July 1897 he went to Chicago and enlisted in the army.
Surviving were his parents, two sisters, one brother. Graveside services were conducted by the G.A.R. Sunday, Sept. 11, 1898 at Riverside cemetery, Sterling, IL.

From his mother's obit: ...son James P. Kereven has an honorable record in the Spanish American war in 1898. He saw active service in Cuba in the battle of Eleana. He was taken sick at Santiago and sent to the Army hospital at Camp Wycoft, Montague Point, NY. (Camp Wikoff, Montauk Point, Long Island, N.Y.?) where he died.
