Jessie Erwin Boyd “Tooley” was a resident of the Pinewood Nursing Home in Hawkinsville, Georgia when he passed into eternity at the age of 79 years.
His wife, Betty Haynes Boyd of Albany, Georgia preceded him in death in 2003. Jessie and Betty were married 45 years. They met at Harvey’s Supermarket where they were both employed.
Biological parents were E.B. Boyd and Mozelle Nichols of the Dooley and Pulaski County area.
“Tooley” was raised as a youth in Hawkinsville in the family of Buford and Kathryn Vaughn.
During his life, Jessie held numerous jobs including picking cotton as a child, clerk and bagboy at Harvey and Piggly Wiggly Supermarkets,
Mobile Home Construction, Borden Ice-cream Delivery Truck Driver, Reeder and Gay Dairy Foreman, Manatee Pipe Fittings, Port Manatee Docker and Engineer. His last paying job prior to retiring was as a clerk and manager for several years at the Corner Liquor Store in Hawkinsville, Georgia.
Jessie was well known in the South Georgia and Central Florida Areas for being “The Leader of the Band.” He played country and gospel music in numerous lounges and service clubs with his bands. His life-long ambition was to be a country music star. Only once in his life did he make it to Nashville, Tennessee to enjoy the Grand Ole Opry as a spectator. Jessie believed Hank Williams, Sr. was the King of Country Music and Loretta Lynn was the Queen of Country Music. During his retirement, Jessie enjoyed leading karaoke at family celebrations and community functions.
A visitation with the family is scheduled for Monday, January 07th, at Clark Funeral Home in Hawkinsville, Georgia, 142 Commerce Street. The family will receive visits beginning at 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow immediately at 3:00 p.m.
