Lewis took ill. The Daily Nonpareil, Council Bluffs, Wednesday November 3, 1880 notes that (under Dunlap Doings): "Mr. Lewis Bouton is quite ill at this time and his recovery is very doubtful." Sadly, he passed away October 29, 1880.

Lewis had definitely died by 24 October 1882 when his widow Minerva married in Dunlap (her third marriage) Russell P. Lawton, a clergyman. (It was also his third marriage.)
