Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Captain and commander of Company C, 97th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Fort Blakely, Alabama on April 9, 1865. His citation reads "Among the first to enter the enemy's entrenchments, he received the surrender of a Confederate general officer and his headquarters flag". His Medal was issued on October 9, 1879.
