A retired magistrate in Henrico County, Va., he served with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for 20 years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant, was an Eagle Scout, and also was noted for his marksmanship skills.
Surviving is his wife, Barbara Carneal Cox Stokes of the home. Also surviving are two sons born to him and his first wife, the late Janet McCaffrey Stokes; Michael Merle Stokes and wife, Desiree, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and Scott Christopher Stokes and wife, Melanie, of Powhatan, Va.; two sisters, Holly Keck of Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Janice Gray of Carova, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Locust Grove Cemetery, the Atkinson Family Home, Mineral, Va. Friends may join the family at the residence. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Edenton, N.C., and Lacy Funeral Home, Mineral, Va., is assisting the family with arrangements.
