Gerald was the son of Joseph and Hazel Dobkins Cooper. He rode his horse to a one room schoolhouse, graduated from Marysville High School in 1948 and attended the University of Kansas. Gerald served our country in the US Navy and upon his honorable discharge was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He began his career as a lineman in Manhattan, moved to Lawrence where he was a switchman, and eventually to Topeka when he served in the engineering department. Gerald’s invention of a switching relay was put to use by the company. He served Southwestern Bell for 42 years before retiring.

On July 2, 1955, Gerald and Marilyn Haxton were united in marriage, enjoying 63 years together.

Gerald was a member of Highland Heights Christian Church, Masonic Lodge No. 17, Topeka, American Legion Post No. 1 and was past president of the Sertoma Club. Gerald loved to fish. He enjoyed traveling abroad and computer technology. He loved his family and spending time with them.

Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Marilyn; his sons, Jerry Cooper, Greg Cooper (Jody) and Michael Cooper (Karolin); grandchildren, Jason Cooper, Christopher Cooper, John Cooper, Erick Cooper, Alex Cooper, Cody Cooper and Ellyn Cooper; great-grandchildren, Lilla Cooper and Jack Cooper; and his twin sister, Geraldine Robbins. He was preceded by his sisters, Donna Matt and Kathleen Cosman and two brothers who died in infancy.
