Graveside services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, Indian Creek Cemetery with full military rites by the Allen Wright Hanft American Legion Post 100. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, Columbus Junction.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa - Russell R. Newell, 84, Columbus Junction, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at his home.

The Rev. David Cone will officiate the services. Casket bearers are Tom Lahl, Noel Newell, Brian Newell, Lyle Shellabarger, Steven A. Sents, Roger Hunt, Matthew Hunt, Tom McFarland and James Hafner.

Memorials may be made to the Columbus Community Public Library, the Louisa County Historical Society or to the Columbus Community Heritage Center, former site of Columbus Junction Public Library. Online condolences may be left for the Newell family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Mr. Newell was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Louisa County, the son of Hugh Robson and Sarah Matilda Shellabarger Newell. He married Margaret Carper on Dec. 10, 1946, in Denver, Colo. She preceded him in death Nov. 6, 1984. He later married Gloria Hafner on April 21, 1990, in Benton, Ark.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a flight instructor and participating in the aerial mapping of Brazil. He achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He was a graduate of the University of Denver Law School and worked as an attorney in the Columbus Junction area for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Columbus Community Club, the Louisa County Zoning Commission, the Board of Directors for the Colonial Manor Care Center of Columbus Junction and a founding member of the Louisa County Historical Society. He took an avid interest in purchasing farm ground in Louisa County and was an active supporter of the Democratic Party, serving as a local caucus representative at both the county and state levels. In his free time, he enjoyed reading poetry, especially selections by Rudyard Kipling.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Columbus Junction; a son, Michael R. Newell and wife Julie of Benton; a daughter, Sara L. Newell M.D. and husband the Rev. David Cone of Tulsa, Okla.; four granddaughters, Elizabeth, Alexandria, Christina and Margaret; a great-granddaughter, Jade; and a sister, Marjorie Gerdts of Boise, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; and two brothers, Herbert and Lewis Newell.
