Lewis Hugh Newell, 90, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at the Colonial Manor Care Center of Columbus Junction. Funeral services were held on Friday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa. Rev. Ralph Draper officiated. A memorial has been established at the funeral home in Lewis’ name. Burial was at the Indian Creek Cemetery (Louisa County, Iowa). Sympathy notes may be left to the family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

He was born July 8, 1913 in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa, the son of Hugh R. and Sara M. (Shellabarger) Newell. He married Mary Evelyn West on July 11, 1933 in Illinois. He was a farmer in the Concord township (Louisa County, Iowa) his entire life and a member of the Pleasant Grove Community Church. He was the Columbus Community School Board President for 20 years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau Board and the Columbus Junction State Bank Board for several years. He enjoyed wood working.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn of Columbus Junction; his 4 daughters, Sharon Arteaga and her husband, Al, of Panama City, Florida. Mary Paulding and her husband Tom of Hillsboro, Illinois, Melody Evans and her husband, Dennis, of West Amana, Iowa and Christine McFarland and her husband, tom, of Columbus Junction (Iowa); 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Herbert Newell and his wife, Mildred, and Russell Newell and his wife, Florida, all of Columbus Junction (Iowa); 1 sister, Marjorie Gerdes and her husband, Jack, of Boise, Idaho; and a special friend, Ranvir Singh and his wife, Usha, of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Tamara; and twin sisters.
