Labourer. Died in Dr Gilroy's Hospital
On the memorial (placed here to not distract from the names) - City of Napier
On 3 February 1931, a 7.8 earthquake shook the whole of Hawke's bay. The city centres of both Napier and Hastings were destroyed. 258 people died as a result of the earthquake, most of whom were Napier Citizens.
This memorial records the names of 86 of those killed and interred in this mass grave, as well as 23 buried elsewhere in this cemetery. This burial site is believed to be the largest mass grave in New Zealand
The memorial was designed by Napier architect J.A. Louis Hay, also responsible for designing many buildings in the post-earthquake reconstruction of Napier.
"Faith and Courage" the motto on the Napier City crest reflect the values and deeds of Napier citizens during the recovery and rebuilding of the "newest city on the globe".
