James was born c. 1800 in IN or OH, according to the census records of his children. Family tradition states his parents settled in OH. His parents are still unknown, although speculation exists as to who the possible candidates may be. On Jan. 5, 1826, he married Jane Stewart in Montgomery Co, IN. To this union were born 9 children. In 1839, James and his family moved to what became Adams Township, DeKalb Co, MO. James died before April 1845 (from court records) from what we know today as yellow fever. His wife Jane died within months as well, leaving the youngest children orphaned. The older siblings were appointed as guardians of the younger siblings. James and Jane were both buried in unmarked graves in the Wamsley cemetery. Markers from the 1840s were uprights and any marker placed on their grave was done in the 2000s and is not the original marker.
