Polly Bowman married Andrew Hull Courtney ca. 1860. Their early married life was interrupted by the War Between the States, in which Andrew served as a corporal in Company F of the 26th North Carolina Infantry. Returning home after the Battle of Gettysburg, where he lost his left leg in Pickett's Charge, Andrew resumed farming. He and Polly eventually became the parents of eight children: John Andrew, Mariah Isabella, William Gamewell, Marcus Lafayette, Laura May, (Rev.) Robert Marshall, Henry Marvin, and Fanny Lou.
