Lela Hacking Hunting

1933 - 2018

Early Life: Lela was born August 8, 1933, in Lapoint, Utah, to Carl James Hacking and Grace Leona Richins, their only livingchild. Lela's parents were her best friends.

Life's Work | Service | Interests: On July 4, 1950, she married Max R. Hunting in Roosevelt, Utah. She said he was handsome and a hard worker. Lela was a telephone operator, secretary, bookkeeper and ditch master in Lehi, Utah. Lela was a perfectionist in everything she did. She made most of her daughters' clothing as they were growing up, and Barbie doll clothes for Christmas. She also made her own patterns for satin Christmas ball ornaments that represented other countries and professions. She knitted and crocheted blankets and sweaters, and loved to collect and buy beads to make matching sets of jewelry. Her favorite store was the Deseret Industries to search for local treasures and furniture that she would often bring home, refurbish, use to rearrange her home and four months later give to her kids and grandkids and start anew. She spent many years compiling genealogy books and was a meticulous bookkeeper and family historian. She wrote a few lines in a journal everyday since 1949. She loved recipes, cooking and making candy. She collected Singer sewing machines, McCoy cookie jars, spoons and coins. She became an expert in finding old treadle sewing machines at pawn shops and antique stores to restore to give to her daughters and granddaughters. She was a member of Tops Club for fifty-one years and enjoyed her weekly meeting with her close friends. With her sudden health conditions, she endured ten weeks, which included six hospital stays, one rehabilitation facility, one nursing home, accompanied by her son, and ten days of hospice care by her granddaughter and daughters. Lela Hacking Hunting died Thursday, December 13, 2018, at her home in Lehi, Utah. She was 85.
