He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Jo Ann Williams Barringer, his sisters Betty McKeon, Phyllis Whitley and Blandina Barringer. Martin, is survived by three loving daughters and sons in law: Teresa and Steve Mescher, Lisa and Raymond Lancaster, and Jeannie and Mark Adams, grandchildren: Michelle Adams, Ray, Ricky and Eddie Lancaster, and many nieces and nephews.
As an outstanding student he received a scholarship to Pfeiffer College where he met the love of his life and future wife, Jo Ann Williams. Throughout his college years, Martin worked various jobs to supplement his scholarships. In gratitude to Pfeiffer University, Martin and Jo Ann endowed a need based scholarship for students from Iredell and Cabarrus counties.
Martin, an honor student, earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, a Doctorate of Dental Science and Masters of Orthodontics from the University of North Carolina. During his early career, he worked for the Atomic Energy Commission hydrogen bomb project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and on a team in dental school which was awarded a NIH research grant. He served as a Naval Officer and dentist at the Green Cove Springs Naval Base, Florida.
In the early 1960's Martin set up an orthodontic practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. Later, he served as President of both the UNC Orthodontic Alumni Association and the North Carolina Orthodontic Society. During his career he treated thousands of patients in the Charlotte area. He loved children and creating beautiful smiles on his patients using both his skill and personality.
He and JoAnn enjoyed their retirement years in Sarasota, where they made many wonderful friends.
