Middleton Boy, 13, Killed in Station Wagon's Crash

Daniel Cantwell, 13, son of Mr & Mrs. William B. Cantwell, 7402 Elmwood Ave., Middleton, was killed shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday when the station wagon in which he was riding crashed into a 10 foot irrigation ditch at Old Sauk Rd and the West Beltline. The driver of the station wagon, Richard D. Colby, 16, son of Mr & Mrs. Amos Colby, 6514 Mendota Ave., Middleton, was in satisfactory condition at Madison General Hospital with chest injuries and face cuts. County Police Sgt Roy Anderson said Beltline drivers reported three other boys climbed from the wrecked vehicle and were driven away by a passerby. Two of them, Ronald Acker, 14, of 7503 Terrace Ave, Middleton and Michael Schultz, 15, of 7443 Franklin Ave., Middleton were located later at University Hospital where they were reported in satisfactory condition being treated for brain concussions. The third youth with them, believed to be Acker's brother, refused treatment and left, hospital officals reported. The passerby who drove the three youths to the hospital was asked by Sgt. Anderson and Deputy Coroner Donald Scullion to call the Dane County Traffic police department in Madison, 266-4100, area code 608. The station wagon, traveling west on Old Sauk Rd., ran the arterial stop, crossed the Beltline, went down the 10-foot embankment, and rammed into the other bank of the drainage-type ditch, Anderson said. Several Beltline drivers reported having to swerve their cars to avoid hitting the station wagon, the sergeant said. Young Cantwell's death was the 27th in Madison and Dane County this year. He was a seventh grade student at the E. G. Kromrey School, Middleton. Surviving with the parents are seven brothers, Michael, 70 Merlham Dr., Madison; Stephen, 127 E Johnson St., Madison; Jeffrey, Grand Rapids, MI; Roger, Seattle, WA; and Patrick, Thomas and Edward, all at home; and two sisters, Beverly at home and Mrs. Arthur Jordee, Oshkosh. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Middleton. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Gruber Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 tonight.
