WEST DOVER - Mrs. Jason Rice, whose body was brought here from Searsburg for burial Monday was Amoret Martha Negus, daughter of Loren and Emily (Clark) Negus, born in Clarksburg, Mass., July 27, 1839, being one of a family of nine children. She came to Dover at the age of three years with her parents, who moved on to the Oliver Gillett place, near the Marlboro line. A few years later the family moved to West Dover, going from here to Somerset about the year 1862.
On July 7, 1863, Miss Negus was married to Jason W., son of Willard and Bathsheba Rice of West Dover. They lived in this place for a time, and here were born to them two children, a son and a daughter, the elder of whom died when but a few months of age. They then moved to Somerset, living in different places there many years, two more sons being born there. Mr. Rice's family next moved to their present home in Searsburg.
Mrs. Rice united with the Congregational church in West Dover while living here. For many years she had been in poor health, resulting from kidney trouble, and for some time past had failed rapidly, until the end came last Friday, just a week before her 78th birthday anniversary.
The funeral in charge of Undertaker H. G. Allen of Wilmington, was held at the house Monday at 10 o'clock, Rev. J. Wesley Rafter, who is supplying the Baptist pulpit at Wilmington, officiating. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The burial took place in the Mountain View cemetery, beside the grave of her son. Besides her husband Mrs. Rice leaves a daughter, Mrs. Fred Hawkins of Readsboro, two sons, Hugh and Harold, of Searsburg, several grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Letia Coleman of Jamaica, two brothers, Timothy and Merrick Negus of Wilmington, also several nephews and nieces.
