Actress. She was best known to film viewers as the co-star in such Clint Eastwood films as "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976), "The Gauntlet" (1977) and "Every Which Way But Loose" (1978). Born Sandra Louise Smith, she spent a year at Middle Tennessee State University before a friend helped her prepare for a role in the 1968 film "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" after she was discovered in a talent search. She received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in the film. Besides "The Outlaw Josey Wales," "The Gauntlet" and "Every Which Way But Loose", she went on to appear in other films such as "Bronco Billy" (1980), "Any Which Way You Can" (1980) and "Sudden Impact" (1983). She also appeared in such television series as "Night Gallery," "Kung Fu," "Barnaby Jones" and "Cannon." She also portrayed the singer and actress, Rosemary Clooney in the CBS television movie "Rosie: The Rosemary Clooney Story" in 1982. She later sued Clint Eastwood for both palimony and fraud, but settled both cases. She would later direct and produce several films. She passed away of cardiac arrest stemming from breast and bone cancer.
