Mr. James William White, who was devoted to his family, his church and his alma mater, died December 8 at 103. He was a resident of the Village at Brookwood.

Mr. White was married to the late Sara Roberts White for 68 years, together raising two daughters and a son, the late David William White. They were both members of the First Baptist Church in Burlington and sang in the choir over 5 decades. He was a former Sunday school teacher at First Baptist.

Mr. White attended Elon College, beginning a lifelong relationship with the school. He studied both music and chemistry at Elon, graduated in 1940 and was the oldest living alumnus at the time of his death. He was a member of Kappa Psi Nu Fraternity.

Mr. White enjoyed attending events at Elon for many years. He was also an avid golfer, an ardent traveler and a connoisseur of sacred and opera music.

A native of Cabarrus County, Mr. White was the son of the late William Lee White and the late Beulah Skidmore White. He retired from Glen Raven Mills after 45 years of service as a dye chemist overseeing the dyeing process at the company. He was deferred from active military service during WWII because of his work for his company in coordination with Dupont Chemical Company which successfully developed a patented process to retard mold on tarpaulin material used for tents in the Phillipines. He served as a pilot in the Civil Air patrol in Alamance County from 1940 to 1945.

Mr. White had a deep affection for the Burlington area and the State of North Carolina. He served on the Board of Directors of the Memorial Hospital of Alamance for over 35 years and was a former member of the Elon High School and Western Alamance High School Committee Boards. He was also a member of the Burlington Toastmasters Club.
