Virgil R. Ball, dies here
Virgil Robert Ball, 78, who was the first man to hold the office of district attorney after Garfield County was joined with Canadian, Blaine, Kingfisher and Grand Counties, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 1980, in Watonga Municipal Hospital. Born to Jesse R. and Viola Ball on April 29, 1902, in Custer County, he spent most of his life in Watonga and Oklahoma City. Ball was elected for a four-year term as district attorney in 1966. He had also served as Blaine County attorney from April 1963 to December 1966. His career also included serving as legal counsel for the Anderson-Pritchard Oil Co. (now APCO) and later with the legal firm of Darrow, Brown and Ball in Oklahoma City. He had lived in the Watonga area for the past 18 years. Ball was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association for more than 50 years, The Blaine County Bar Association and the Masonic Lodge. He was a graduate of the Cumberland University School of Law in Lebanon, Tenn. His funeral was held Saturday, Sept. 6,in the First Baptist Church at Watonga, with Rev. J. Martin Edwards officiating. Graveside rites followed in Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City. Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga was in charge of arrangements. An infant brother preceded him in death. Ball is survived by his wife Mabel of the home; two sons, J. Robert Ball of Wichita, Kans.; two daughters, Beverly A. Ball of Wichita and Linda Marcello of South Pasadena, Calif.; a brother, Roy H. Ball, Oklahoma City, a sister Goldie Perryman, Oklahoma City, and nine grandchildren.
