Melvin E. Cook, 101, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday December 6, 2018, at the Meth-Wick Community.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday December 10, 2018, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held 1 hr. prior to service at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Ivan Nienhaus will officiate.
Melvin was born August 12, 1917, to Ervin and Ozela (VanFleet) Cook in South English, Iowa. He married Mary Dahlem on September 19, 1942, at St. Patrick’s Church in Cedar Rapids. Melvin worked as a firefighter for the Cedar Rapids Fire Dept. When he left the fire department he was district chief of the east side.
Survivors include a son Robert (Denise) Cook, of Marshalltown; a daughter Mary Jean Prull, of Cedar Rapids; a brother Jeff Cook; 7 grandchildren: Tara Thompson, Shara Goodrich, Brian Prull, Ami Leonard, Jeremy Cook, Dan Cook and Nate Cook and 13 great grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Mary, of 68 years; a son-in- law Jim Prull and a great grandson Shane Prull.
