(e) 1992: Elvin J Cary after retiring from the CTA helped organize and start the Matthew House in Chicago that is a nonprofit community-based organization and has provided food, daytime shelter, permanent supportive housing, and supportive services to men, women, families, and children who are experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless.
(f) 2003: Elvin J Cary was elected first-African American Legion President. The Legion is a non-profit organization of US war veterans. The Legion was formed Mar 15, 1919, in Paris, France & chartered by the US Congress Sep 16,1919.
