Col. Wm. H. Taylor died Saturday night at the residence of Mr. Echols, west of town, and was buried in the city cemetery yesterday afternoon. A special permit was given for the hearse to go out, and on its return to the quarantine line, a number of Confederate Veterans and other friends escorted the body to its last resting place. Col. Taylor is one of the very oldest and most respected citizens of Jackson. He was born in Virginia June 16, 1816, came to Jackson in 1838, being then in his twenty-second year, was several times mayor of the city and sheriff of Hinds, and served in two wars, the Mexican and civil war. He had passed his fourth score year and leaves a record of "a good name, which is rather to be chosen than great riches."

Taylor served as Captain for Co. A, the Raymond Fencibles until promoted to Lt.-Col. of the 12th Mississippi in Corinth in May 1861. He was elected to Col. on 28 April 1862 during reorganization beating out Henry Hughes after multiple votes. Taylor served as Col. until the Spring of 1864.
