She created a Greek Resistance group during the Axis Occupation called Bouboulina.
Lela was married and a mother of seven children. She and her followers forged documents, supplied information to the British, and smuggled wanted persons to safety. Lela was captured, tortured, and executed in Haidari Concentration camp only a month before the liberation of Greece.
She was honored by Israel as being righteous among the nations in 2011.
