Thomas Gibson Boyd, 90, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, November 25 at Grand Strand Hospital, following a brief illness.

Mr. Boyd was born April 16, 1928 in Conway, South Carolina, the youngest child of the late John Myrtle Boyd and Mary 'Mamie' Burroughs Boyd.

He attended Conway High School, where he lettered in football and baseball, played first trumpet in the band, and was valedictorian of his graduating class. He received his B.A. and M.Ed. degrees from the University of South Carolina, where he completed additional postgraduate work. Mr. Boyd was First Honor Graduate in his class at Carolina, graduating magna cum laude, and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Boyd began his career as band director at Lake View High School, going on to serve as band director and social studies teacher at Aynor High School for 11 years. His marching bands won numerous awards at parades and festivals, including the Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington, DC. After completing graduate school in Columbia, he returned to teach Psychology at Coastal Carolina University, also serving as Director of Financial Aid and Director of Student Affairs during the 1970s. Professor Boyd was twice the recipient of Coastal's Outstanding Teaching Award. He became a Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1992, and continued to teach part-time until shortly after his 80th birthday in 2008.

Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Patricia Myrtle Boyd Carroll (George Leon Carroll) and Mary Virginia Boyd; and his brother, John Henry Boyd (Doris). He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laura Genewood Brown Boyd; his daughter, Patrice Andrea Boyd, and her husband, Tarpley Semmes Mott, of New York City; nieces and nephew, Elaine Carroll Parmele, Linda Georgene Carroll, and George Leon Carroll, Junior, of Wilmington, North Carolina; as well as special sisters- and brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews, in his wife's family.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with burial at Ocean Woods Cemetery in Myrtle Beach
