Mrs. Roman was born in Simpson, PA, on February 4, 1925, daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Tirpak) Ohotnicky, and had been a Torrington resident most of her life. She was a graduate of Torrington High School, Class of 1943.
Mary had been employed as a Service Representative at Southern New England Telephone Company for 13 years in the Torrington office and assisted at the Winsted, Canaan, and Hartford offices.
She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church for many years and had been a member and Treasurer of St. Francis School Mothers Club.
In her youth, she had also been elected to serve as President of the Sacred Heart Children of Mary Society. In 1972, Mary graduated from Goodwin Technical School as a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with over 20 years of service. Mary led the fight to stop the installation of a waste incinerator on the Winsted Road with Ralph Nader and was a founder of Citizens Against Pollution. She was an artist for over 60 years and a member of the Litchfield County Art Association. Her paintings adorn many offices and venues in Connecticut.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, Joseph, include two sons, Peter J. Roman and his wife Karen of Jensen beach FL and Vincent G. Roman of New Hampshire; two daughters, Susan E. Murphy and her partner David Gunwald of Old Saybrook and Sally M. Alexander and her husband Thad of Torrington; a brother, Andrew Ohotnicky and his partner Anne Oaks of Ludlow, VT; and five grandchildren, Jessica M. Pretak and her husband Greg, David X. Alexander and his wife Kristina, Matthew T. Alexander, Samantha Murphy, and Sydney Murphy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 10:30a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 160 Main St., Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30a.m. Entombment will follow in St. Peter Mausoleum, Torrington. Friends may call Friday, November 23, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter/St. Francis School, 360 Prospect St., Torrington, CT 06790.
