John was the son of William Leverton, a farmer, and his wife, Ann Draper of Lincolshire, England.

29 Mar 1835 - John was baptized at St Andrew's Parish Church, Heckington, Lincolnshire, England. (His death certificate has birth as 15 Sept. 1842. His headstone has birth year as 1837).

1841- England Census - John is living with his parents and siblings in Semperingham, Lincolnshire, England.

1851 - England Census - John and his family is living in Semperingham, Lincolnshire, England.

26 Nov 1851 - John along with his parents and ten siblings left their home in England and departed from Liverpool, England on the ship, Eudocia, bound for New Orleans.

24 Jan 1852 - The Eudocia ship arrived in New Orleans. It is more than likely that John's parents and some or most of his siblings died at sea or shortly after arriving in New Orleans.

In 1860 - US Census, John was living in Houston, Harris Co., Texas. He was living with the Thomas VanBibber family.

1861-1865 John was a Confederate Soldier during the War Between the States. He was in the Hood's Brigade, the 5th Regiment, Texas Infantry, Company A.

1863 July 2 - John was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. He fractured his left thigh and leg. John's son, John E., told how his father, as he laid injured on the battlefield packed his wound with mud to keep the maggots out. (age: 25)

1863 July 4 - After two days of being injured and lying on the battlefield, John was captured and taken Prisoner of War and was taken to Camp Letterman Field Hospital, Gettysburg, PA.

1863 Oct 27 - John was moved to USA General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

1863 Nov 17 - John was part of a prisoner exchange and was transferred to City Point, Virginia.

1863 Nov 18 - He was admitted to the Confederate hospital; General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia,.

1864 Nov - Retired from military service from wounds received, the degree of his disability was classified as permanent. (age: 27)

1865 Jan - John returned to Texas on horseback. (Family story is that he was attacked on his journey home and he killed the attacker in self-defense).

1869 July 6 - John married Mary Jane Thomas, daughter of Judge John C. Thomas and Menicy J. 'Eliza' (Shepherd) Thomas. (age: 31)

John and Mary Jane resided in Houston, Harris County, Texas where John was a Boilermaker.

In 1920, John fell ill with the Spanish Flu. His son, Tom, came from San Antonio to Houston to see his dying father. Tom also became sick with the Spanish Flu and died five days before his father. John died 16 Feb. 1920. (age: 82)
