Her maternal grandfather, Adolfo Sjogren, immigrated from Sweden to Panama during the construction of the Panama Canal. There, he met Maria's maternal grandmother, Martha, of Columbian Indian heritage.
During WWII, Maria met U.S. Soldier Samuel Oliver Elder, Jr. of Charlotte County, VA, who was stationed in Panama. They married in Colon, Panama, and she gave birth to her only child, Thomas Oliver Elder. After the war, Samuel brought Maria and Thomas back to Charlotte County.
In 1956, Samuel Elder died at the age of 38. A few years later, Maria married another Charlotte County native, Robert William Carson.
Maria and Robert Carson remained in Charlotte County until their deaths.
