"Stamford [sic]Summers Expires at 84-Active in Civic and Church Affairs"
"Uncle" Stamford Summers, 84, a prominent resident of Sidell, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 24, 1936, at his home following three weeks illness ending in uremic poisoning.
Mr. Summers was prominent in all civic and church affairs in Sidell. He was a member of the Methodist Church here, which he helped build. He was employed by the C. & E. I. Railroad Company many years. Following injury in a wreck several years ago he was made watchman at the crossing here. He retired in 1929.
He was born Jan. 11, 1852 at Seymour, Indiana, son of Elijah and Nancy Summers. When 7 years old he came to Flora, Illinois, to make home with an uncle. He was married Jan. 31, 1875 to Miss Henrietta Moats, Clay City, Illinois. They lived near Homer, Sidney and Allerton before moving to Sidell in 1885. When they built their home here there were only 14 residents. They celebrated their first wedding anniversary Jan. 31.
Surviving are the widow; three sons, John 116 Jefferson Street, Danville; Charles, Tolono, and Fred, Elgin; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Witt, Sidney, and Mrs. Laura Cox, Sidell.
Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the home. The Rev. A. H. Coleman, pastor of Sidell Methodist, will officiate. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Indianola, with Hartbank, Tolono undertaker, in charge.
