Henry Freeman accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of 15 by the Rev. Geo. Roy. He was raised and received his education in the state of Louisiana.
Henry Freeman was united in holy matrimony to Josie Marie Johnson on August 25, 1940. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. In 1942, Henry Freeman migrated to California, settling in Compton in 1952.
Henry Freeman was a well-known entrepreneur of the community. In 1965, he opened a hamburger stand on Wilmington Avenue. Around 1974, he opened a fish market next door. Since this business was located across the street from the Little Zion Baptist Church, Henry Freeman became well acquainted with Pastor Fisher and the members of the church. To them he was affectionately known as "Uncle Charlie" and "Joe".
Henry Freeman took great pride in his community and held great respect for Little Zion. He would keep a watchful eye on the church, and if anyone acted out of order, he wouldn't hesitate to straighten them out!
Henry Arthur Freeman departed this life on Sunday, May 24, 1987 at 4:45 am. Left to cherish his memory are his four children, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives, customers, and friends.
