Survived the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, aboard the USS Farragut, a destroyer moored in Pearl Harbor. He was an 18-year-old fireman 1st class at the time of the attack. He later became a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Mr. Cobern was a Master Mason of Oak Park Masonic Lodge #864 and also was a co-founder and operator of Cobern Fertilizer, Inc., with his wife Agnes Wilson Cobern.
