Dora Mae Williams, 93, of Brookings, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at the Brookings Hospital. Memorial services are planned for Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at the chapel located in The Neighborhoods at Brookview. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Dora Mae Williams was born on March 2, 1925, in Canton, South Dakota to Watson and Gretchen (Loomer) Dittmer. She graduated from Brookings High School, and also attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. Dora Mae also completed her Masters work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In 1949, she married William McKinley Martin Jr., and to this union two children were born-June in 1950, and William in 1951. Following their divorce, Dora Mae was united in marriage to Perry Warren Williams on June 13, 1956, in Brookings, South Dakota and Edward Perry Williams was born in 1957. Perry passed away on November 3, 2000.
Dora Mae was a loving and generous mother, with a beautiful heart and soul. She was a wonderful and kind woman with a a strong Christian faith.
Dora Mae had a passion for music, and was a music teacher in Montana for grade and junior high schools, a music teacher in Toma, Wisconsin, teaching music to all 12 grades, and a music teacher at the Brookings School District for grades kindergarten through 6th grade. She also greatly enjoyed teaching individual piano lessons. Dora Mae was the pipe organist at the Methodist Church, and later the Baptist Church in Brookings in the 1950s, followed by the First Church of God, and Morningside Church, where she acted as the organist until she retired. She continued as a piano accompanist for the Morningside Church vocal and instrumental musicians into her 80s.
Dora Mae was a loving and generous mother, with a beautiful heart and soul. She was a wonderful and kind woman with a a strong Christian faith.
Dora Mae is survived by her children: June Marie Dircz of Savage, Minnesota, William James Williams of Boulder, Colorado, and Edward Perry Williams of Brookings, South Dakota; her grandchildren: William David Williams of Golden, Colorado, Benjamin James Williams and Gretchen Lisbeth Williams of Boulder, Colorado, Michael John Yerxa, Derek James Yerxa, and David Isaac Yerxa (Chelsie) of greater Minneapolis. She has five great-grandchildren in the Twin Cities, Mason Edward Dircz, Declan Michael Yerxa, Trixie Rose Yerxa, Indie Rose Yerxa, and Nova Mae Crystal Yerxa, and two in Golden, Colorado, Gemma Rosemary Williams and Weston Allan Williams; as well as special friend Mona Hendrickson.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Perry Williams, her parents, brother Edward Dittmer, and special friend Eva Hendrickson.
