Gene Elizabeth Blubaugh Taylor, “Genie”, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the age of 93. From her birth in Chambersburg, PA, on August 29, 1925, to her death on Saturday, she nurtured those around her with her love, respect, and care. She was born to the Reverend Benjamin Franklin Blubaugh Sr, and his wife, Elizabeth Mensor Middour Blubaugh and was the youngest of their four children. Genie was also blessed to have four older half-sisters and one older half-brother who continued to be a part of her life as she grew. She was named by her father after a remarkable author, Gene Stratton-Porter, after he had heard her speak at a conference. Ms. Porter was an Indiana native who was an author, a naturalist and a photographer of the natural world. Ms. Porter used her popularity as a well-loved author to create support for the conservation of an endangered wetlands and swamp called the Limberlost in 1917. She went on to produce films and eventually own a production company in 1924. Genie’s father felt that his beautiful little daughter would benefit from a strong name in this ever-changing world.
Early on, Genie’s father was transferred by the church conference to the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church in Myersville, MD. He was a circuit rider preacher and rode his horse on Sundays from Myersville to Pleasant Walk and Walkersville to preach. Genie loved everything about growing up in this rural area. As a little girl, she loved her school, her teachers, her church, her family and her kitty, Bobby. She and her sisters loved their brother’s dog, Johnny Boy, too, who was the ever-patient friend and would allow his coat to be brushed and “fancied up” with curlers. During this time, she participated in the many wonderful activities of the church and loved playing hide-and-go-seek in the cemetery behind the parsonage, visiting Reno’s Farm, and being surrounded by love from her family and her church family.
When Genie was heading to sixth grade, the church conference moved her family once again. This was a hard transition as they left the farming community for a much larger urban parish at Monroe EUB Church in Baltimore, MD. Once the family settled in, this new environment brought new challenges and opportunities to grow. Genie, once again, became involved with the church activities and found success in the city schools. She graduated from Western High School with honors and won the Lizette Woodward Reese Award for Poetry. Singing continued to be an ever-present theme in her life and not only did she sing in the school and church choirs but also at the church services her father offered at the MD State Penitentiary as he was the chaplain there.
Genie had hoped to go to college and become a teacher after high school, but World War II was raging on and so she went to work for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. She met and married James Zachary Taylor on May 5,1950, whom she met through her brother-in-law and who was a WW II Veteran. He was the love of her life and they were happily married until his sudden death on May 27, 1982.
While a young married couple, she and Jim created a cozy apartment in their home in Woodlawn for her parents upon her father’s retirement. They had two children, a son and a daughter, and they provided many wonderful opportunities for family and friends to enjoy happy times and make long-lasting memories at their always open and welcoming home. Family and friends were very important to them. Genie volunteered at both her church and her children’s elementary school, Woodlawn Elementary School. She continued to sing in the choir at church and served on many committees that involved working with children and outreach. At the elementary school, she was an active member of the PTA, hosted the Annual Book Fair, assisted with the annual Turkey Dinner, and provided supplies for teachers and students. She was a much-requested substitute, too.
As her family grew, Genie went back to school and got her certificate for early childhood education. She taught preschool for 40 years at Milford Mill Church Child Development Center. This was the joy of her life! Today, many former students and their families still remember the impact she had on their lives—including a vice president of a large bank in New York City who remembers her every year at Christmas since he was four years old and in her class.
Genie really believed that the future of our world depended on the interactions, no matter how small, that each of us makes each day. She truly believed that the children are the wise ones and can teach us so much about living and growing in this world. She always told others to “make sure that you listen to the children and spend some quality time with a child today. You can make a difference in this world when you help them to unlock their magnificent potential.”
Left to honor Genie and her legacy of love are her two children, Debra Jean Myers and her husband, Ken; James Zachary Taylor, Jr. and his wife, Mary; five grandchildren; Kenneth Andrew Myers and his wife, Tania; Katherine Elizabeth Myers Buckler and her husband, Nikolas; James Zachary Taylor III, Benjamin Lee Taylor, Christopher Thomas Taylor; one great grandson, Dylan James Buckler; and many loving nieces and nephews. Genie was preceded in death by her parents, brother Benjamin Franklin Blubaugh Jr.; and two sisters, Haidee Belle Kaslusky and Florence Virginia Steil.
Genie will be remembered as a bright, shining light of love and kindness in this world. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at Milford Mill United Methodist Church, 915 Milford Mill Road, Pikesville, MD, 21208, with Rev. Larry Plymire officiating. The Committal Interment service will be Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 9:30 AM at Lake View Memorial Park. The family will greet friends and family on Friday, November 9, 2018 from 3-5 & 7-9 PM at Milford Mill U.M. Church.
