His father, John Rogers Commons, graduated in 1888 from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio; noted institutional economist and labor historian; retired in 1933 from University of Wisconsin at Madison. John was an American economist who became the foremost authority on U.S. labour in the first third of the 20th century.
John married on Christmas Day, 1890, to Ella N Downey (1865-1927), daughter of Robert N. Downey & Julie Ann Kitchen (1843–1891); 6 children--in the 1910 census, Ella reported she had six children, but only two were still living: John Alvin Commons & Rachel Sutherland Commons.
