By blood, she was Calabrian. By citizenship, she was American. By faith, she was Catholic. True to her calling, she was a devoted wife and mother who leaves her grandchildren a legacy of compassion, and love. Virginia Chirico will be remembered for her sweet kind and giving heart, as the supportive one who was always there for everyone. She truly had a heart for her family, and the Lord.
Virginia passed into the Lord’s care Friday, November 2, 2018 from her Mansfield home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 82.
Born Virginia Sorrentino on May 30, 1936 in Mansfield to Nicholas and Rose (Galizzi) Sorrentino, she was graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1955.
A lifelong member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, she served with the parish treasury guild, and will be well remembered for working 25 years as a cashier in the Mansfield Senior High School lunch room.
Virginia enjoyed painting and sewing, cooking and baking. Her spaghetti and lasagna were extraordinary! And she baked bread every week. Her pizzelle and “Grandma C” sugar cookies, along with her peanut butter pie, biscotti and cakes became a love language from her kitchen.
She loved family activities, including travel to Las Vegas, camping trips to Canada, a trip to Italy, and retirement time in Florida.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Rose (Don) Callahan of Mansfield, Tony (Ruth Ann) Chirico of Lexington, and Nicholas (Jackie) Chirico of Lewis Center; grandchildren Erica (Ryan) Mayersky, Marissa Watson, Felicia Chirico, Nicholas Chirico, Amanda Chirico and Anthony Chirico; sisters Nancy (Danny) Howard and Dolly McDonley, sisters-in-law Mary LaSusa and Amelia Miller, a brother-in-law Sam (Pat) Chirico; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mariano Chirico in April of 2002. Also deceased are sisters Frances Comer, Janie Krausnick and Nancy Sorrentino.
The Chirico family will receive guests Monday, November 5, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday at 10 am in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, celebrated by the Very Rev. Father Gregory Hite. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery.
