She passed away early Wednesday morning, March 20, 2013, at her residence in Wills Point.
Dorothy was born on January 6, 1924, in Edgewood, Texas, the daughter of Denton Lee "Dutch" Bateman and Pearl Arline Long Bateman. She was a native of Wills Point. On January 21, 1953, she married Matthew J. Barnes in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dorothy took the post of the county's veteran's service officer in August, 1984. She was selected as the Outstanding Veterans Service Officer of the Year in the Dallas Region in 1991. Other awards and recognitions include Van Zandt County Citizen of the Year in 1987, Award of Achievement and Appreciation from the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce and an Award of Merit for Outstanding Achievements from the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society. Dorothy's main purpose in life was serving the veterans of this country and anybody else who walked through her door. In addition to the long hours that she devoted to veterans, Dorothy somehow found time for a number of other worthy causes. She was a member of both the Canton and Wills Point Chambers of Commerce, member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, held a lifetime membership in the Wills Point Historical Society, Van Zandt County Genealogical Society and the Van Zandt County Friends of the Library. Dorothy was a member of Russell Memorial United Methodist Church in Wills Point.

Dorothy is survived by two granddaughters, Katrina Lee Barnes, of Galveston and Candace Michelle Barnes, of Como; one great-grandchild, Kelter Wade Arnold and her caregivers, Betty Brandon, Emma Eli and Annie Antia.
