Melvin Dale Miller was born
February 13, 1949 in the Porath
Hospital, Storm Lake, Iowa, the
son of Verna Mae and Dale Miller
of Newell, Iowa.

He was baptized in the First
Methodist Church of Newell on
March 13, 1949. He confirmed
his faith in his Lord and Saviour
on April 7, 1963 in the First Congregational
Church of Newell.

When Melvin was three years
old his parents moved to a farm
near Schaller where they lived
in the Schaller and Galva Community
for seven years. During
this time Melvin attended the
Galva Community School for five
years. The family moved back to
the Newell community in January
of 1959 where Melvin then attended
school at Sulphur Springs and
later finished his schooling at
Newell- Providence.

In the spring of 1967 he went
to work for LeRoy Stokes at the
nursery in Sac City. In that same
year during June^ Melvin went to
work for a manufacturing com
pany at Dayton, Iowa where he
worked for a brief time. In Aug.,
of 1967 he went to work at the
DeKalb Agricultural Firm in
Storm Lake. Melvin loved the
out-door activities and his greatest
desires were to work with
and for agriculture. He worked
at the DeKalb Plant until he entered
the service on April 2,1969.
He received his basic training at
Fort Lewis, Washington. While
there he received a trophy for
being an expert on the rifle range.
After furlough in December of
1969 he was sent to Vietnam. He
was placed with the 534th Transportation
Co. which was stationed
at Long Ben, twenty five miles
north of Saigon. In January of
1970 he became engaged to Marlene
Bauman of Schaller, Iowa.

Recently Melvin had been promoted
to Specialist 4. He was
given a citation for driving 15,000
miles without an accident. He
had received the good conduct ribbon
for being outstanding in both
efficiency and conduct. He has
received the National Defense
Ribbon, The Vietnameese Campagn
Ribbon, the Vietnameese
Service Ribbon and The Purple
Heart for being wounded in action.
On July 14, 1970 while part of
a truck convoy believed to be
headed for the Cambodian Border
with supplies, he was ambushed
and killed by enemy forces.

He is preceded in death by a
sister, Lesia Marie on December
18, 1966, and his maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Just.

He is survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Miller of
Newell; one brother, Dennis Lynn,
at home; his paternal grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller
and a host of aunts, uncles and
cousins and many friends. May
God grant his peace and comfort
to those who are left to mourn.
