He continued his track career at Abilene Christian University where he graduated with a degree in Business. He met and married his college sweetheart, Diane McLean Smith on June 12, 1982.
Together they weathered several moves around Texas, California and back, career-changes and finally came back to Garwood to work for 52 Farms with his brother, Madison Smith.
His family always knew they could count on him for anything. Whether it was a fix-it issue or to help them pack and move, which he was the unparalleled expert. He was first to work, last to leave and easy to laugh.
Everyone who knew Clayton was aware of his second love: deer hunting. He claimed his adept skill came from his color blindness, but whatever his secret, Diane compromised and embraced his second love by decorating their home with his mounts and antler sheds.
