Hermann was born in Berlin to Galician Jewish parents from Rzeszow and Krakow. He grew up in the Jewish district in the Spandauer Vorstadt, gaining both religious and secular education. He served in the German army in World War I. He entered the garment industry as a a menswear wholesaler and later owned a second company that manufactured outerwear for men and boys. He married Elly Wohlgemuth and they had one child Helga Ringel. The family lived in Weissensee and then Charlottenburg. He managed his businesses through all the challenges of the 1930s. He died of a natural cause while planning his family's escape from Germany. Three months after his death, his widow and daughter fled Berlin and eventually settled in the United States.
