Born on January 4, 1925 in Quarryville, PA, Mervin Beck was the son of Enos and Mary Beck. He was a graduate of Quarryville High School in 1941 and Franklin Marshall College in 1944. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served on several ships in the Pacific Theater in WW2 earning the rank of Lieutenant. He married Fay Beck in 1947. After leaving the U.S. Navy in 1954, he worked for Hamilton Watch Company and Bendix Corporation (Raytheon) until his retirement in 1990.
In York, Merv was best known for his work with the York Aquatic Club where he designed and directed the construction of the first electronic judging and timing device in the United States for the York YMCA Swim Team. Known as the Monster, this timer continued to operate for a long time, even after it was replaced by a modern system. He was also a deacon at Bethany UCC Church for many years.
Survivors include Fay Beck, his wife of 72 years; two brothers, Donald Beck of Lititz, PA and Carl Beck of Lancaster, PA; two sons, Rev. Greg Beck of Victoria, Australia and Neil Beck of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; two daughters Mervanne McLee of Rockford, Illinois and Phyllis Beck of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
