Born in Virginia to William B. and Mary Henkins Goodwin. He married Matilda Magdalene Tenney in 1856. They were a member of the Mt. Carmel Church at Tallmansville, and he was a post master at Grassrun 1857- 1859, justice of the peace in 1862, was appointees as Constable of Upshur County in 1867. They had 9 children: George H, Ellen Jane, Catherine, Arthela, Clark L, Oscar Benson, Etta Ann, Lora, & John Homer. He was a farmer and owned land in Washington Dist.
