Frances Carolyn (Lyn) Lyons
April 28, 1934 - October 14, 2018

Frances Carolyn (Lyn) Lyons died in hospice care in Bakersfield, after a long battle with Alzheimer's and multiple myeloma.

She was born April 28, 1934 to Charles Leigh Riley and Frances Cornelia Rubush in Richmond, Virginia. At age 5 a move to Glendale, CA put her into the local school system where she was graduated from Glendale High with the class of 1952. She was active in the school newspaper with her own column, and became active with horses and art painting. She was named Honored Queen of the Order of Job's Daughters at 13 years of age and had a painting she had done circulated throughout the US. After a short stint at UCLA, she received a Phillips art scholarship to study at the University of Tulsa, with Brad Place and Alexander Hogue. At TU she joined the Tri-Delta sorority and was named Kappa Sigma sweetheart. She was successfully graduated with a degree in commercial art, skipping the graduation ceremony to wed Robert Sam Lyons in Independence, Kansas on the same day he joined Texaco Oil Company. She spent one year in Texas and Illinois with Sam in a foreign operations training course. Lyn gave birth in Glendale to their first child on their first wedding day anniversary. They spent 10.5 years in Venezuela with Texas Petroleum Company (TEXACO) where she returned to her horsemanship while continuing her work on wildlife painting. In 1963 she worked with Avon cosmetics as art director in Caracas. In 1969 Sam took a LOA and obtained an MBA from U. of Southern California, returning to South America with TexPet in Ecuador. Lyn really developed her riding skills during the 5 years in Quito. Later Lyn lived with Sam and her family in Connecticut, New Jersey, Iran and Bolivia While in Iran, Lyn had begun concentrating on her dressage skills. After Bolivia, Lyn spent seven years in Bakersfield, CA where she was active in the CDS, studying with Hilda Gurney, training horses and competing in dressage. Lyn retired to Arkansas where she continued her career as a dressage trainer, instructor and competitor with ODS. Lyn enjoyed travelling to Europe often, and later in life, golfing with Sam. In 2006/07 Lyn was in the wide open country with her "personal group of wild animals' while living in a small cabin beside a stream on Casper Mountain. During this varied life, Lyn maintained her consistent output of new artwork, especially of wildlife. Her multiple myeloma activated in 2014 and also Alzheimer's disease bloomed, the effects of which caused the move to Bakersfield to be with family.

Lyn was preceded in death by her parents, uncles and her brother C. Leigh Riley, Jr. She is survived by her husband Sam, her son, G. Leigh Lyons (Jeanie), and daughters Diana J. Craig (James) and Melissa L. Rytokoski (Mikka), seven grandsons, and one great-granddaughter.

Her ashes will be interned at the National Military cemetery in Bakersfield at a later date.
