Gate City, VA - James Harve Tipton, 86, Gate City, VA passed away, Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Tipton was born in Scott County, VA on August 10, 1929. He was the son of the late Thurman Harve and Albie Josephine Bates Tipton.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the World War II era.
In addition to his parents, his sisters, Lentha Templeton and Kathleen Edwards; and brothers, Roy, Charlie, Howard, Omer, Nelson, Ellis , William, and Cecil Tipton preceded him in death.
Surviving are his children, Thelma Jane (T.J.) and Tim Archer, Kingsport, TN, Edith Faye (Edie) Lane, Kingsport, TN, Charlie (Darrell) and Reta Tipton, Church Hill, TN, James (David) and Cindy Tipton, Duffield, VA, and Carol Ann and Levi Waddle, Weber City, VA; sisters, Rosa Farthing, Kingsport, TN and Pauline Thompson, Weber City, VA; special grandson, Wayne Smith III, Weber City, VA, with whom he had a special bond. They were like two peas in a pod. Mr. Tipton was very proud from the day Wayne was born. He never got to see Wayne graduate Medical School, but he will be watching from Heaven. His survivors also include several other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Jimmy Combs officiating. Charles and Lorie Mellons will provide the music.
Military Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Tipton Cemetery, Bellamy Town Community of Scott County, VA near Mr. Tipton’s family home, by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Funeral Honors Guard. Levi Waddle, Wayne Smith III, Christopher Tipton, Eric Tipton, David Jennings, Mark Tipton, and Tim Archer will serve as pallbearers. Bill Tipton, H.C. Lane, Bob Lane, and Eddie Mellons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Gate City Funeral Home at 10:15 a.m., Saturday to go in procession to the graveside service.
