KINGSPORT - Omer Tipton "Tip" of Kingsport, age 91, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at 8:50 a.m. at his home in Kingsport.

He was a born again Christian and of the Baptist faith. He attended Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was a charter member of the National World War II Museum and a member of the V.F.W. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union. Mr. Tipton, like many others, during World War II served his country with great pride. He fought for the freedom of worship, and the freedom of speech. He served in the United States Navy aboard the famous warship, the U.S.S. O’brien, both in in Europe and the south Pacific.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Georgia Lane Tipton; his parents Harve and Albie Bates Tipton, seven brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Sharon Hicks, son-in-law James Hicks, one grandson Daniel Hicks, all of Chattanooga, TN. He is also survived two sisters, Rosa Farthing and Pauline Thompson; one brother, James Tipton.

He retired from the Mead cooperation with more than 40 years of service. Mr. Tipton and the O’brien crew of 365 men fought in the following battles: The Battle of D. Day in Normandy, France, the liberation of the Philippine Islands, the Battle of Japan, and the battle of Okinawa, Japan.

Mr. Tipton was awarded the following medals: The American Campaign Medal, the liberation of the Philippines Campaign Medal, the Asia Attic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Jubilee Medal of Liberty, the World War II Victory Medal and six Bronze Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged after two years and four months of service.

There will be a Military Honor’s committal service on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of East Lawn Memorial Park. Military Honors will be provided by the Kingsport American Legion Post 2/365.
